Durch das vom 20. Dezember 1965 von der Volkskammer verabschiedete Familiengesetz gewann die Familie als „kleinste Zelle der Gesellschaft“, wie es in der Präambel des Familiengesetzbuches (FGB) heißt, an Bedeutung im Sozialismus. Das Hauptziel der Familienideologie der DDR warfare es, die Frau, beziehungsweise die Mutter, vollständig in den industriellen Produktionsprozess einzugliedern und somit eine Gleichstellung beider Geschlechter zu erreichen, um die individuelle „Entfaltung“ von Männern und Frauen zu garantieren.

Ziel dieser Ausarbeitung ist es, einen Einblick in das Familienleben zu gewinnen, das Familienideal der DDR kennen zu lernen und die sozial- politischen Maßnahmen zur Unterstützung dieser nachvollziehen zu können. Im Verlauf wird versucht, Antworten auf zahlreiche Fragen zu finden. Wie kamen die Ehepartner mit dem beruflichen Eingebundensein und der Unterbringung und Betreuung der Kinder in staatlichen und betrieblichen Einrichtungen zurecht? Wie gestaltete sich das Familienleben, wenn guy relativ wenig Zeit füreinander hatte? Wirkte sich die Erziehung und Versorgung der Kinder durch staatliche und betriebliche Organisationen auf die Eltern-Kind-Beziehung aus und warfare die Vereinbarung von Beruf, Haushalt und Kindererziehung ein Konzept, dass allen Familienmitgliedern gerecht werden konnte? All diese Fragen kommen auf, wenn guy sich mit dem sozialistischen Familienideal beschäftigt. Viele Probleme tauchen auf, wie zum Beispiel die Doppelbelastung der Frau, die „Vernachlässigung“ elterlicher Pflichten und der Mangel an Zeit für die Kinder sind nur wenige davon. Um diesen Problemen auf die Spur zu gehen, habe ich diese Arbeit verfasst.
